Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. Observed each year on June 14, it honors the flag as a symbol of the nation’s history, ideals, and unity. Traditions include flag-raising ceremonies, displays of the flag at homes and public buildings, educational programs about flag history and proper flag etiquette, and moments of reflection on the sacrifices made for the country. Although not a federal holiday, Flag Day offers an annual opportunity for citizens and communities to celebrate and reaffirm respect for the American flag.
